Advantages of a Pivitec Personal Monitor Mixing System for Houses of Worship

A Pivitec Personal Monitor Mixing System can have a positive impact on all aspects of sound quality in a House of Worship application. While most attention is given to the benefits of using Personal Monitor Mixing for musicians in live performance or recording, these systems can also improve the performance environment for the sound engineer as well as the audience or congregation. Excessive sound volume from the improper use of monitor wedges can cause the sound to spill off the stage and into the audience or congregation. This can negatively affect the sound engineer’s ability to provide an intelligible mix at a comfortable volume and therefore make the environment uncomfortable for the audience. In addition, musicians can typically hear each other’s monitors mixes. Replacing the stage monitors or wedges with a Personal Monitor Mixing System can create a more comfortable environment for the musicians as well as the tech team and congregation. This will also help your musicians to hear and play better.

A common solution for the stage volume problem is to replace the monitor wedges with Personal Monitor systems such as headphones or In Ear Monitors (IEMs). By definition a Personal Monitor creates a “closed acoustic environment”  for each musician that does not affect or interact with the other musicians monitors. While this has a positive impact on the performance environment, it can create new challenges for the sound engineers and may require specialized equipment for proper implementation. As the needs of each musician are different, it is necessary to create a custom stereo mix for each performer. (Stereo is preferred for In Ear Monitor applications in order to better replicate the “open” acoustic environment of the stage and avoid the closed, dry feeling often associated with the use of IEM systems.)  Many venues and touring acts will often add a mixing console and personnel dedicated to controlling the monitor mix for the musicians on stage but this can be disadvantageous in many situations due to increased equipment, transport and personnel costs. In many venues there may be insufficient space for the extra console and personnel or the existing sound console may have insufficient resources to support the necessary number of stereo aux sends required. The implementation of a Pivitec Personal Monitor Mixing System can be a cost effective solution that provides greater flexibility and expandability than other solutions. Each Pivitec e32 Personal Monitor Mixer effectively adds a stereo aux send thereby overcoming the limitations of the console.

Other popular systems can require a computer to act as a proxy server for remote control and may also limit the control to a fixed number of mono aux sends. This type of solution will also require additional hardware such as cabling and headphone amplifiers. to get the mix to the musicians. A Pivitec Personal Monitor System is a stand alone system that does not require any additional equipment to set up and operate other than a simple WiFi router. Each e32 Personal Mixer has a high quality headphone amplifier as well as balanced line level outputs and requires only a single CAT5 cable for both power and network audio to be delivered to the musician. Control is accomplished via a secure WiFi connection between each iOS device running the Pivitec V2Mix Application and the e32 Personal Mixer. So, whether your church or application needs 6 or 60 stereo mixes the Pivitec system is expanded by simply adding more e32 mixers to the network using standard ethernet switches and cabling.

Finally, while each e32 Mixer can mix up to 32 channels of audio, it is possible to build much larger audio networks by adding more Pivitec Input devices such as the e16i Analog Input Module and / or e16i/o-MY 16 Interface card for Yamaha Digital Consoles. Each device will contribute a 16 channel “stream” to the network and each musician can then select any two of these “streams” to mix on their e32 Personal Mixer via the V2Mix Application completely independent of any other e32 mixer on the network. Future connectivity with other manufacturers hardware will soon be possible since Pivitec is based on the open Ethernet AVB standards established by the IEEE.

Shortcuts in the v2Mix® iPad App

Based on a few emails we have received at Pivitec Support we thought it would be a good idea to point out a few features and short cuts available in the v2Mix® App for iPad.

Double Tap – “Double Tapping” a slider will reset its position depending on the control function of that slider. This works for the Pan, Channel Volume and EQ sliders as follows:

  • Pan – Sets the Pan control to Center
  • Channel Volume – Sets the Gain to Unity
  • EQ – Sets that EQ Band to Flat

Edit a Channel Name - To Edit the Name that appears beneath each channel strip from the main app screen, perform a “Long Press”: Place your finger on the text box and hold it there for about one second. This will produce the “Set Channel Name” pop up box. Channel Names can be up to 11 characters. This function can also be accessed in list format by tapping the “Settings” button and then the Local Menu.

Select Paired Mixer – To select which mixer your iPad is controlling, tap the Text Box beneath the Master Volume Fader. This is a shortcut to the Settings > Network > Mixer menu. Choose an available mixer from the drop down list and the select “Done” to return to the app.

Clear Solo / Rude Solo - v2Mix® has a stackable Solo bus. When Solo is selected on any single channel, or combination of channels, notice that the Solo Button (Labeled “Clear”) in the Master Section will also light up. This makes it easy to tell if any Channels are in Solo mode. Tapping the Clear Solo button will disable the Solo Function on all channels at the same time.

It’s always a good idea to make sure that you are using the latest version of the App as well as the latest firmware in your Pivitec hardware.
